Regulatory, environmental and economic issues
The European Directive on single-use plastics (SUP) requires a drastic reduction in non-recyclable products. Companies must therefore adapt their sourcing strategies to remain competitive and compliant.
In this context, replacing traditional cutlery with compostable alternatives is becoming a priority. Bioplastics such as PHA provide a technical and ecological response to these new requirements. Compostable forks, delivered in bulk, combine operational efficiency, regulatory compliance whilst respecting the environment.
Compostability standards: a strict framework for reliable products
Biodegradable forks must meet rigorous standards such as :
- EN 13432: guarantees 90% degradation into industrial compost within 12 weeks without harmful residue.
- ISO 18606: provides a framework for compostable packaging that is compatible with biological processes.
- ASTM D6400: recognised for commercially compostable plastics.
- Quality labels such as OK compost INDUSTRIAL and OK compost HOME, issued by TÜV Austria or DIN CERTCO, validate the actual compostability of products.
PHA: performance and biodegradability combined
PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate) is a naturally occurring bioplastic that degrades completely without releasing toxic substances. In natural or industrial conditions, PHA is deadly. It combines robustness and ecology, making forks resistant to heat and use, while guaranteeing a responsible end-of-life. Finally, at 60°C, in an environment rich in microorganisms, it rapidly becomes a fertiliser for soil compost.
Bulk forks: optimising logistics and saving money
This approach contributes to a greener and more profitable supply chain…
- Lower unit costs thanks to the volume effect
- Fewer deliveries needed, so smoother logistics
- Minimised carbon footprint thanks to more efficient transport
Why choose compostable bioplastics?
- Fewer CO₂ emissions compared with fossil plastics
- Natural composting: no pollution, back to the soil
- Soil enrichment via a controlled biodegradation process
- Reduction in landfill waste and associated leachates
- Active support for the circular bioeconomy
Bioplastics: innovation and prospects
Innovative materials
The world of bioplastics continues to make rapid progress, driven by technical advances that make them even more effective and compatible with industrial requirements. The latest formulations now combine PHA and PLA to create products that combine heat resistance (up to 80°C) with accelerated degradability. These combinations reduce the carbon footprint by up to 35% compared with petroleum-based plastics, while maintaining good compostability at the end of their life.
Promising avenues are also emerging around bio-PE (biosourced polyethylene) and bio-PP (biosourced polypropylene), obtained from plant residue. Entirely renewable in origin, these materials are designed to fit into circular production cycles without compromising the mechanical performance demanded by the disposable cutlery and single-use cup industry.
Developments in the regulatory framework
The legislative reforms underway in Europe and internationally are strengthening the position of certified compostable plastics. The European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) authorises EN 13432-compliant bioplastics to be used in organic composting processes. This standard requires biodegradation of at least 90% in 12 weeks, with no harmful residue, enabling these products to be collected with biowaste. A major step towards closing the organic loop.
At the same time, the revision of the SUP Directive marks a decisive turning point: oxo degradable plastics are definitely excluded, while compostable plastics meeting strict criteria retain their status.
Global market dynamics
- According to the Bioplastics Market Development Update 2024, global bioplastics production is expected to reach 5.73 million tonnes by 2029.
- The Asia-Pacific region is recording sustained growth, estimated at +7.6% a year between 2023 and 2030, in the biodegradable cutlery segment.
- The global market for compostable tableware is expected to exceed $65.7 million in 2030, reflecting the worldwide popularity of environmentally-friendly disposable solutions.
